WARNING: Cell Lab is a very challenging game that requires lots of thinking and experimenting. Reading the instructions will be necessary. If you enjoy difficult simulation puzzles then this is for you.

Cell Lab simulates few-celled organisms. It contains 45 challenges where the player is presented with an environment and has to design an organism that will survive in it. Solving challenges unlocks additional genes that can give cells new properties.

The encoding of the cells behaviour has been made as intuitive as possible without losing generality but it nevertheless takes a bit of effort to understand. Going through the provided tutorials carefully is recommended.

Cell Lab also contains an experimental mode where the user can set the parameters of the environment and put designed organisms in it to see how they multiply (or die). It is also possible to seed this environment with random genomes and once a viable genome has been seeded one can see how it slowly evolves through tiny mutations to an organism well adapted to the environment it is in.

It is then possible to change the environment to see how they re-adapt, fast forward the simulation, and finally to save and share it.

This simulation is not biologically realistic, all cells in Cell Lab only has one function, to swim, to eat, to collect sunlight, to float, etc . This is not how cells work in nature where one cell can do many things at once. This accuracy has been traded off to be able to make an interesting game. The cells have also been made to multiply very fast, this also for the enjoyment of the user.

What is realistic is the evolution taking place in this game. How species adapt to their environment and compete with each other to sometimes attain an equilibrium and sometimes extinction.

Features:
• 4 tutorials
• 45 challenges
• 16 types of cells with different functions
• 20 cell-modes per genome to program
• 22+ parameters in each cell mode
• Environment editor with 27 parameters
• Simulates and renders up to 1000 cells at decent frame rates
• Arbitrary number of cells and petri dish size in advanced mode
• Beautifully animated vector graphics that lets you zoom to atomic scales
• Save, load and share both environments and genomes
• Simulation fast-forward and slow-motion
• No advertisements or in-game payments

This app needs three permissions:
• Internet access. This is required to send bug reports and other anonymous usage data.
• Network state. This is required to make sure bug reports and usage data are only sent over wifi to avoid using mobile data.
• External Storage. This app needs to be able to read and write external storage so that the user can send and receive samples as email attachments.

App ChangeLog

  • - 2 new cell type, Ciliocyte and Gamete
  • - Increase from 20 to 40 modes
  • - 6 new substrate parameters

A great game about microscopic life! This game has simple graphics but complex parameters and that's what I think makes the game. The only problem I've had was that there is no way to make a .genome or .substrate file, but aside from that good experience!

This is an awesome game, you can simulate life and evolution at your fingertips! The challenges do get pretty hard but even when you can't complete all of them, the game is still fun. Good job on this game! Also, I ran an evolution simulation starting from a photocyte and it evolved into 2-celled swimmers by itself!

Pure awesomeness. A lot of work has been put into this game, and it shows. This is one the best and most rewarding puzzle games I have ever played. Also there is sandbox available to simulate life and demonstrate evolution itself at your fingertips.

Very good game, quite difficult but it is very rewarding when you manage to succeed. This game is not for everyone but I do enjoy the challenge, it is more engaging and not as mind numbingly dull as a lot of mobile games.

Because I looked up tutorials and played the in-game tutorials and still can't play good and why why does the game make you do the challenges why can't there be a separate game mode with all of the cells unlocked.two star's take it or leave it

Incredibly satisfying when you solve the puzzles, and equally as challenging. It's educational, too!

It's really fun and all. But I can't get past the balloon challenge is it Evan possible? Iv Ben trying for days now and thay just die out instead of getting 200 balloon cells. Why did you make it so damn hard iam only 8 so please make this easy for ages as me.

Everything else is amazing in this game I love and and I have completed it, But its just missing one key thing, cloud saving, each time you Uninstall this app it does not save the data and the data does not transfer over other devices as well I dont want to keep working my butt off reunlocking everything over and over again! Please add cloud saving.

Very fun and creative game, can keep you busy for hours. There is one thing I would suggest - more complex cells like myocyte and neurocyte and their parameters still remain quite confusing despite in-game info, so maybe you could add short video explanations how certain parameters work. Otherwise, incredible game.

Most people won't see this as a game, but me personally I have a lot of fun in most fields of science. Making/modifiing cells in this game to see what type of life I can create has sucked up hours of my time. The tutorials aren't the best, but once you figure it out you won't want to stop
