Backgammon is a game of skill and strategy; one of the world's classic parlour board games, played for recreation and gambling. Like Mahjong, Backgammon is played in social groups in coffee houses and bars. Historically, variants of this game are believed to have originated in Egypt over 3000 years ago, from where it was adopted by the Romans and then later travelled to India. It also spread to East Asia, but was largely replaced by Xiangqi (Chinese chess). It is now very popular in the West.

Featuring:
-- Strong Backgammon AI
-- 5 Difficulty levels
-- Full match play + Doubling Cube & Crawford rule options
-- 6 Boards and 4 Piece Sets
-- Single Player vs Computer or local 2 Player
-- Hint & Stats
-- Random Dice generator or Manual Dice input
-- Designed for both Tablet and Phone

*Does the Backgammon engine cheat? See "CPU Strategy" page + Manual Dice option (use real-world dice) to prove to yourself that it doesn't*

Reviews From google play store

Great game for a new player (wish there were more tutorials). The animations are nice; movements are simple. Level 1 play is suitably winnable for a n00b. I'm not advanced enough to judge the higher levels yet. My only wish is that there were some strategy tutorials in here, like you get with a lot of chess apps, etc.

DO NOT PURCHASE! Computer just got behind & rolled itself 5 str8 dbl 6's... INCREDIBLE! DICE ROLLS ARE COMPLETELY RIGGED! More doubles are rolled by this game than any other time in history. When the computer gets behind in L5, 73% of its dice rolls are doubles. Impossible to win, when computer rolls 6-7 str8 dbls. DOUBLES upon DOUBLES. Nothing but doubles at times...this goes for both sides. NOT RANDOM DICE ROLLS AT ALL!!!! Use the free app to see for urselfs. DO NOT PURCHASE ANYTHING FROM A.I.

I play every day at least three or four times I don't like the ads but I do like the game. The pieces are moving real jerky though.

I have never played a game that cheats more. The game throws so many dice in favor of the computer it is ridiculous. Perhaps you should look at all the rest of your reviews! LOL! Dumb asses!

BAD STRATEGY ON THE COMPUTER'S PART. CHEATS!!! The more difficult the more the the game cheats. Despite the claims, the dice rolls are rigged. Roll real dice & see. Does the developer know how to play?

Well designed with lots of features to make the game play faster, BUT when it comes to the computer taking pieces off the board, it often "plays" stupid. I want to win honestly. I mean seriously, if you have 8 pieces in the "1" position and you roll double ones, you take four off the board. This game will have the computer move pieces over and take NOTHING off the board. Very annoying.

A beautiful and perfect app. Graphics and sound are superb, they really make it seem like the checkers and dice are physical 3D bodies, which is so very pleasant. Gameplay is great, there are five difficulty levels and everything runs smoothly. Colors of the board are in perfect taste. I've been playing a lot of Backgammon Free and I've now decided to buy Backgammon because the ads started to annoy me and I started to deeply love this game.

Nice interface, OK AI, it's very conservative about doubling. Quite beatable to level 4. On hardest level, dice seem skewed, you can win 7-0 then lose 7-0. over and over. The computer will play for a gammon when possible, would benefit if the Jacoby rule was an option: gammons can't be scored in an undoubted game.

This developer's version of backgammon is my favorite in the Google Play store. It has plenty of game-play options, and there are five levels of difficulty in single-player mode. Other reviewers say this game is rigged to roll more doubles for the CPU during single-player mode, but my stats do not bear that out. I mostly play level 3, and after 400+ matches at that level, I have rolled 1790 doubles vs. 1775 for the CPU.

I've been using this app for almost 10 years. Nothing else touches it... I have learned the intricacies of the game and my tactics would still be flawed if I hadn't been using this version. Level 5 uses flawless mathematical tactics (aside from when bearing off for some strange reason) so sometimes it's obvious you're playing a machine... But I wouldn't still be playing the same machine 10 years later if the AI didn't allow me to recognise some neat tactical tricks

I have had this game for several years, I really enjoyed it and would have given it five stars, but some time ago you got ride of the multiple game matches which I found very enjoyable and the choice of levels to play, now it seems rather one dimensional. I will still play but I really miss the challenge of previous edition of the game.

Wonderful! This app is great fun, and an ad-free bargain at $1.99. My husband works odd hours as a TV director, so I'm often looking for things to keep me occupied while he sleeps. I read voraciously, but sometimes you're in the mood for a classic game, and Backgammon hits the spot every time.

AI end game logic is flawed. Backgammons happen even when there is an easy out. Game rejects double when it means a loss, instead of playing out the game. UPDATE: It's a full year later and the end game play is still just as bad as ever.

Generally a good time passer game if you like backgammon. One star off because of its dice rolling algorithm which sometimes appears to be favoring the cpu. There are games that no matter what combination played (via the Undo feature) are for the cpu to win due to the sequence of the numbers in the dice rolls.

Of all the Backgammon Apps, this is by far my favourite. BUT... there is a big issue that makes gameplay really irritating. CPU bearing off!! CPU spends too much time moving all the checkers onto the 1 & 2pt even when opponent is already bearing off. CPU sometimes even leaves a checker outside it's homeboard, whilst moving all checkers onto the 1&2 pt again. I have won many gammons because CPU is doing this. It makes play very unrealistic and uncompetitive. Can you fix this?

I consider this app to be the number one reason I have never switched over to iPhone. There are certainly a multitude of other reasons, but the one that far outstrips the others by magnitudes is the fact that this app is not available on iOS. I love my backgammon. 🥰

I'm not buying the explanation I was given. On higher difficulties the AI gets the "exact" roll it needs to knock pieces off of the board practically without fail. You need a different company to test your number generator then man.

A very simple game, perfect for times when I want to switch off. Easy to use, especially if you've played the board game. I've enjoyed all of the Brainium games I've tried. PS: I only buy the ad-free premium games. It's worth the $3!!!

My original review was 5 stars and this used to be my favourite game but the play has become very jerky and lagging since the Android 9 update and this has spoilt the game for me. I've contacted the developers but disappointingly have had no response.

Backgammon has always been a favorite if mine. This online version does not use the real rules of the game. The point system is all wrong and what about pips. Would you like playing chess without the real rules? This simplified version is good for wasting time while you wait for the bus.

No nonsense interface. Strong AI. Love the auto bear off feature. I'm a strong player and can beat this only half the time. Honest, clean computer dice. Nice layout for two players as well.

Great user interface - attractive, intuitive and easy to use. However, the CPU strategies are very poor, particular when it comes to thr doubling cube and the end game, and it's far too easy to beat.

It give you tons of options to setup play. Keeps me focused on strategies. Only thing I continue to notice is that it plays first so many more times than I get to... very noticable when I play many times in a row.

I love this game! Keeps me on my toes and challenges me to do better than my last game. This a game that I enjoying since I was little, I still have original game board and play whenever I get an opportunity to do so.

Love backgammon but this game is simply designed with the if/then algorithm.... if you leave a pip open and the only possible roll for the computer to knock it off is a 2-5, the algorithm will allow the 2/5.... the game is set up to AI cheat

I've been playing this app for several years. It helps to keep practising though there are a couple of perceived issues. Firstly, yes I know the dice rolls are random but honestly if you are bearing off and throw a number but are unable to take a stone off that point, it seems like that number will come up again on the next throw. Most odd. Auto bear-off function is weak, sometimes moving stones' onto points that already have stones on rather than onto vacant points. Still my preferred app.

To make it more difficult thet made the computer get like 4 sets of doubles when taking off, it will always roll perfect dice that will land on your tiles. So instead of a better opponent they made the game cheat, or just better luck

update: after a long break, i picked it up again and it's much more fun. It looks like they fixed their algorithm. I don't think it's possible to write an algorithm that perfectly mimics random chance in an environment that requires human error. I'm mixing the rolling algorithm with the playing algorithm but that's what seems to be the case. That said, this is a beautiful, seamless game with well thou

Great time killer been playing this app for years. Computer stinks at winning strategies for match plays. And of course the 'random' dice rolls aren't so random. It gives the computer an unfair advantage at times and gives the player unfair advantages also so its a wash in the end. It may be random in the strictest sense but I believe it gives itself certain numbers to randomize instead of 6.

FINALLY, a back gammon game that doesn't cheat! To be able to track and see the stats is cool and even tho it'd be nice to see some nicer board backgrounds, this game is absolutely 5 stars.

Could be 5 stars...but the CHEATING by the CPU. And before the developers start crying and lying that everything is random. I compiled statistics while playing 1,000 games on level 4 human vs cpu. When the human player leaves a piece uncovered, 34.2% of the time, the cpu will roll the perfect number to land on the uncovered piece. When the cpu player leaves a piece uncovered, 16.8% will the human get a dice roll that allows them to land on the uncovered piece. Random? NO - manipulated? YES

In the past, have enjoyed the free version, but really like not dealing with the glitches that are inherent with the streaming advertising banners.

Scripted games, don't recommend it. When I was first learning, I won more games because cpu moves are scripted to anticipate normal moves. Having gotten better, it is clear that my "smart" moves often lead to me ending up boxed into a move that (of course) is taken advantage of by cpu, who then wins the game in dramatic fashion. Controls get a little wonky at times.

Awesome A++ game with many options and board/chit styles. Been playing it for years. Never get tired of it.

Great for whiling away the time! AI is good, with the exception of bearing off.

Good game, at least not annoying like the rest in the store. Good game play. Seems levelled, and enjoyable.

UPDATED This is a fun time waster game if you like Backgammon and well worth $2. The level 5 AI is pretty good, but as other reviewers have said, it's not great at cube play. Also, the AI will sometimes not move to save Bkgam, when Gam is clearly won.To those claiming the RNG is rigged or unfair, you are most likely experiencing sample bias. Out of 235 rounds, I've beaten the level 5 AI 3:1 in 7 rnd matches. Out of 1497 doubles rolled the AI has only rolled 7 more than I. The dice are fair.

Excellent. Good graphics. Easy controls. Well thought out, challenging, and engaging. Exellent in every way.

Paid for it on 11/12 and was forced to pay for it again yesterday when it suddenly blocked me from continuing. Emailed creator, haven't heard back.

The best AI backgammon I've tried. It knows the rules, which many others don't. _Really_ stupid when it comes to endgames, too easy to win by triple. To those who claim the ai rolls too many doubles: no it does not! I've played many thousands of matches against it and I get about the same number of doubles as it does.

The game fun but too easy. The AI does not use the doubling cube correctly. It also refuses to take risks this means it gets no benefit when risks go well. As a result the computer is easy to beat even on the hardest level.

This is an app whicj cheats through and through. the developer's response does jot address the heavily rigged 'random number generator' and simply brushes thw question asside. Every step of the way, the RNG is riggws doe the app to win. When pressed, they cite a manaual set of dice, when the RNG is the very problem. It is awful to play and be cheated out on this shameful way. App UI and graphics really nice.

This game is as close to the real thing as I've ever found. I used to have a place I could play online against other players but it closed.. this is the next best thing.

Fabulous. Very challenging. Play it to relax. Lots of skill and luck to beat it

Backgammon done right. My only quibble is there isn't online multiplayer like there is in their Chess and Checkers apps.

It's a excellent past time game. The graphics are ok. I find it strange, the opponent wins the 1st. draw approx. 95% of the time. Overall, on the scale of 10 it gets 7. Best regards...

Fun game, well written. Wish the Undo button was always available.

Nice game, good AI, except that it does not prevent a backgammon (and reduce loss to a gammon) when it is possible. I've tested a lot of backgammon games, this is the best. Pretty good game play, nice graphics, statistics, easy control

Surprisingly "he" gets exactly what he needs waaaay too often. But still a great game...thanks to the "undo" button. LOL

Excellent version of Backgammon with very useful tips in the help on understanding the game and getting the most it of it.

Excellent programming. Improvements : easy access to all set up features at all times, multiple levels of sound, quick access to sound level. For instance, tone it down but not completely in a doctor's office waiting room.

I like this game and is great to play; however, as others have said and regardless of any certifying agency it is extremely lucky with doubles when it needs them. Also certain moves it has I can predict it will make before I roll. Still a good game.

Great game and features. Playee over 20,000 rounds. Only issue is the computer could be smarter and the auto complete picks some odd choices that would be shorter to complete the round. Overall, been playing for years and sS happy to pay for add free. Would do it again!

Ergonomically very good. Looks good too. Could do with another notch on the difficulty level to get it to cut out the odd suicidal error but only a minor gripe. Best backgammon implementation I've come across.

Love it. I play it all the time when a few minutes are available. Have enjoyed it for years.

Strongly suspect the higher difficulty opponents are made more difficult by artificially improving their odds of getting favorable rolls, rather than any improvement in strategy. Two stars for good presentation though.

It's been fun. I play @ hardest level on app and win too often but still fun.

Well worth the nominal cost to avoid the very irritating ads in the free version. Some extra graphics options for the board and playing pieces would make this a five-star app.

The AI is OK but not very good. The random number generator can also be improved.

really like this one. I wish the dice roll animation was half as long

I love this game! It doesn't crash, ever. I love backgammon and have tried other apps but kept returning to this one. Ive had this app for years and still going strong.

Thoroughly enjoy the gameplay. Working my way to higher levels.

The best AI i have played against on a mobile device. Makes long flights very bearable :)

Great game that spoils you by highlighting possible moves. Worth the price for no ads!

I've always loved the game and I find this app very satisfying...it's a great time filler!

I have played BG for many years and find this game well designed.

Contrary to the included declarative, I believe this app has the ability to cheat. After many hours of play, I feel that is the only conclusion one can come to. The number of times the Al has rolled the exact numbers needed is astronomical, and even if set on the hardest setting, it should not be possible to ALWAYS get what it needs to catch up or win. There is not that much luck in the world, except perhaps in whatever world the person who coded this fantasy factory exists.

the game is good. But I am noticing that the computer opponent is getting the initial roll of each game about 80% of the time. Needs to be more even

Is the computer tough? YES! I run this app on the hardest setting. I win 25% of the time. Is it frustrating when the computer gets the perfect roll or it doubles, then gets doubles and puts me on the bar? Heck yeah! This app is great and I really want to buy the red and gold board I use in the game. For all those who complain about the computer cheating, get over it. Even if it was, which I don't think it is, I get put in tough situations and I like that. My in-person games have improved.

I don't dispute that the number of doubles is distributed equally, but the distribution of doubles over the course of game is not at all random. In addition to a literally unbelievable number of doubles consistently rolled during end games, I don't think I've ever seen doubles on the first roll of the game. It's also pretty amazing how I can have five points covered in my home quadrant, but the computer almost always get what's needed to move a stone back into play in one roll. I rate this game a solid "meh".
> people are very good at seeing patterns in randomness
That's some weak sauce. I could just as well claim that some people are not very adept at seeing patterns and insist that what they see is randomness.

I love this game. I love the way everyone thinks the CPU is cheating. Haha, why would they do that? Follow the link and read up. Ever tried to beat a chess computer? The CPU is not cheating. It just plays the best moves with the dice rolled. One little thing though, please change it so it doesn't unnecessarily lose by a gammon when it could have moved the lady piece out of the back quadrant.

Says the rolls are random. Hmmm, I don't know. Always seems to give itself a double on one of the first five rolls. Keeps me on the bar for several rolls even though only two or three points are covered, and more often than normal probabilities, gives itself big doubles during the race to bear off. On a positive note, the interface is great, and the record keeping is very helpful.

Have played this game since I was 6 years old! 41 years on, I love just as much. Hmmm... maybe more, as strategy comes with practice!

excellent and addictive, my only criticisms are that, unlike the real thing, this game prevents certain legal moves. also, the way the AI bears off seems designed to allow the player a greater chance of winning - it's frustrating that these issues are baked into the game, but overall, if you enjoy backgammon, they don't come much better than this. it just needs a couple of tweaks to attain perfection.

I've been using the same app since the the jailbreak days before the app store was released. Simple and fun. Careful with this game in general though. It has the potential to put you in a really bad mood :p

Super.! Real backga.mon dice and move sounds. Accurate. Nice design.

Graphics are great. The play levels 1-3 are too easy. Level 4 or 5 are based on some algorithm that, supposedly, reflects the play of thousands of games played in real-life. I doubt it. Regardless of the explanations given by the authors, probabilities are probabilities. Anybody with a modicum of training in statistics will immediately detect VERY low probability occurrences that happen repeatedly. When I play with manual dice I will beat ANY level every time. When I play with CPU generated “random” dice, I watch in amazement as the CPU’s pieces hopscotch through a veritable minefield. It is a good game for a beginner, but, unfortunately, it will teach some awful habits that go counter good skill development. An opponent who always runs and always hits every blot is simply not fun. Use the game for entertainment, if you are bored. For learning proper backgammon you will have to look elsewhere. After all, what do you expect for 2 bucks?

plays pretty well. After 200 matches against the computer at level 5, I've won about 60% of the matches and 65% of the points. I'm good, but not that good. it has some basic flaws in logic, such as giving up backgammons when it could avoid it. it's a good app to learn and get better at backgammon, just wish it was a little smarter.

I have been playing this for many years now so have some heavy duty experience and statistics to back up the following comments. I play at the highest difficulty level and play matches to 15 points. I am beating the CPU by a long margin so it's not that hard to beat. Doubles rolled and first dice rolls won are statistically very close. I do think the RNG seems a bit dodgy. Sometimes the same throws come up far too often. But it does seem fair as far as I can tell. End game play is rather weak.

I have played backgammon since I was a child. I am now retired and still continue to play on both the board that my parents bought me at 10 and on a Note 10, 2014 tablet. In my opinion this is best android version of backgammon. I have the paid app. When playing against a human opponent on a tablet you can appreciate the look and feel of a real game board. Statistics: I would like to see the number of doubles rolled broken down by the number of double 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. Thank You AI Factory!

I really enjoy this game. However, I win most of the time. The computer could be smarter

Excellent backgammon games, never crashes, simple but great graphics, been using it for a few years, never tire of it

Excellent backgammon game that's been around for a long time and is still being supported. I see a lot of accusations of it cheating; however, the code has been thoroughly vetted by a 3rd party to ensure it's fair! ***PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE consider adding running dice totals to the stats to SHOW people it's balanced?*** (You may need to add in unused rolls for when the opponent has blocked the home quadrant hence making all moves impossible, to avoid stats being skewed.)

I am well aware of your claims of clean play. Be advised that your AI is under evaluation, and the findings so far are bleak. On the highest settings, I would expect the CPU to consistently play the best moves. It sometimes plays obviously foolish moves and flawed strategy (e.g. unnecessarily exposing blots in home area), yet the dice very seldom allow me to take advantage, enabling the blots to be rescued next move. I am only reporting on what I have observed after well over 100 rounds.

Love this app - really - but...I wish the there were higher levels on single player mode - these levels have been the same for a while now

Great app, I'm a novice but love the speed of game that allows for a lot of practice in a short period of time.

Not very reliable when CPU accepts double in very precarious situations.

this is a great backgammon game with choices of boards. however having played the game constantly through 3 weeks, the CPU had rolled 60 more doubles than me so the CPU seems to have a lot of luck and a lot of doubles I threw were when I was blocked off the board, so I didn't get to take the moves. however. it is still one of the better ones

Absolutely merciless opponent at level 5. Has really improved my skill in backgammon.

The auto bare off even on level 5 makes questionable moves... Example: you have no peices in positions 5 and 6 and you have 7 peices left between positions 2 and 4, and you role 5 and 1, it will take peice in say position 4 and move it to position 3 and then take it off the board instead of taking it off right away and moving a different peice hence gaining advantage of that 1...also does a stupid job in filing empty slots when taking prices off like if have 2 prices in each of positions 1 4 5 and you role 5 3, then it correctly takes a peice from 5 and then role a peice from 4 to 1 (now you have 3 prices on 1 instead of moving a peice to a completely empty slot (2) in case you tole a 2 on the next role, hence increasing your odds of taking a peice off the board in the next play.... All those things happen on level 5 which I find unacceptable

Absolutely nailed on cheating AI. Sorry. I've played backgammon for over 40 years and never seen such consistent dice cheating as this game produces over and over again. Miraculously throws exactly the dice needed to get itself out of a difficult position time and time again. Especially when bearing off. Uninstalling. Don't bother with it unless you.enjoy being conned.

Had the paid version for a few years and play 3 or 4 times a day best out of 7. Really good game.

this game cheats, the authors will deny it as they always have, but i can prove it after playing it for years. it is designed to force the reasonable moves you can make (to your advantage sometimes, but most often to your disadvantage) and gives itself the most unbeatable dice rolls absolutely consistently at least at the more difficult settings. its not 100 percent to your disadvantage but so deeply so that it would defy the odds of normal random chances. timing of doubles too.

By far the best I've played. I only wish your team developed an iPhone version. For now, stuck playing on my tablet.

Spent many happy hours playing this game. The highest level is tough, but beatable.

I am no backgammon wizard so it is easy to think that the game is rigged when I get clobbered for my dumb moves. I took their advice and tried the game using manual rolls and it pretty much bore them out. When I was losing, it was because of my poor choices. I'm still not 100% convinced the game doesn't take advantage of the pieces I leave open but I suspect once again the fault is mine. This is a very enjoyable game and it's well conceived.

Bought the game outright for $1.99. Was a brilliant move. Liked the free version LOVE the ad free version.

Great game. I am able to consistently win single person first to 15 point matches at level 5. I say this not to praise myself but to point out that if the game cheats, which I don't believe, then it doesn't make a good job of it. If you keep losing then improve your understanding of probability.

I've wasted many hours playing this game @ Level 5. I have two comments: (1) The dice algorithm is suspect. It's very cyclical (periods of low rolls followed by periods of high rolls, several repeated rolls, & several repeated single die rolls, i.e. can easily get in a 4-hole where one of the die is consistently a 4); (2) Strategy: when down to the last roll and CPU is about to lose with pips in the opponents home, it doesn't move out, so instead of losing 2x it loses 3x. A person would get out!

I like this version, although the AI makes some odd decisions when Bearing Off: on no account use the Auto Bear Off option!
